Christmas 2021

The origin

Lectec’s story begins with a child’s curiosity. It was Christmas morning - and Jared has just gifted his nephew Brian a brand new electric skateboard. Brian had been wishing for one since Jared started his first company selling electric skateboards (at age 15) a few years prior.

As Brian pulls the board from the box, he immediately asks the magic question, “How does it work?” So, underneath the twinkling lights of the tree, Jared pulled apart the board, and began to explain how motors, gears, and batteries all worked seamlessly together for the board to run.

When the time came for Brian to take the board outside, Jared’s sister knew that Jared had stumbled upon something special, turning to him and saying, “Uh - hello?! Do I need to slap you? Do this for kids!”

And, at that moment, Lectec was born.

The problem

Growing up, Jared was never engaged in school - he was always asking himself, "When am I ever going to use this in the real world?" So, when he saw a video of an electric skateboard, he was instantly hooked. After tinkering for a few months, he had his first operational electric skateboard. After a few years, he was a fully self-taught electrical and mechanical engineer - designing, manufacturing, and selling every part of an electric skateboard from the basement (and eventually garage) of his parents' house. When the idea for Lectec was born - it clicked that Jared had learned so much from building a PEV - so why couldn't everyone?

Lectec is born

After running his previous company throughout high school and college, Jared decided it was time to go all in on Lectec, so he sold a majority share of his previous company and put every single penny into Lectec.

Jared's best friend, Luke, who he had met while riding an electric skateboard around campus one day, was super supportive with Lectec and would help out from time to time. Upon graduation, Luke got offered his dream job as an Engineer at Amazon.

The first kit

After a failed crowdfunding campaign and losing tens of thousands of his own investment, Jared turned his efforts to what he knew best - making a great kit. The first beta program launched with 50 families in the NYC metro area. During this time, Lectec was headquartered inside of Mineola High School's Synergy Campus. This meant that Jared got to work alongside current high school students to build the business - and teachers to help write curriculum!

We're all in

Jared convinced Luke to quit his full time job at Amazon - sacrificing a great career and stability to go all in on inspiring the next generation of engineers. Like Jared, Luke was never exposed to STEM and engineering in school. This shared experience and mission lit the fire that Lectec needed to grow! We started regularly attending trade shows, developing more curriculum, and earned our first real revenue!
